Programmers.io modernizes applications and processes for a timely resolution
About Client
For 30+ years, it has assisted over 16,000 global customers in building and construction, field services, and manufacturing.
The Challenge
- The client’s ERP system managed numerous requests from existing and new customers. Manual data handling often leads to human-prone errors. They wanted to add new features and functionalities to minimize errors and streamline the process.
- The software did not work on many modern platforms since it integrated third-party technologies based on the legacy .NET Framework 4.5 and SQL server. Some legacy active-x controls also needed to be replaced as they no longer worked on modern browsers.
- It had persistent SSRS reporting timeout issues, bugs, and defects that required fixing. However, the client lacked reproducible steps, domain knowledge, and product version variations, which increased the bug reproduction time in the development environment.

About Client
The client is a well-known women’s apparel company with 60+ years of experience in the retail industry. Their products can be found online for global purchase. Furthermore, they have their products at 65 retail outlets, 70 signature shops, and several departmental stores in the USA. They offer products exclusively for the summer season that range from vibrant casual clothing to elegant accessories.
...The Challenge
The client has an e-commerce website based on a legacy AS400 backend. This website required data to be updated manually on the IFS files. This manual data update created a problem in providing customers with real-time updates, which resulted in poor user experience. Furthermore, the website lacked a password policy to educate users on the importance and best practices of developing and implementing strong passwords.
Programmers.io streamlines development and QA processes for logistic leaders through strategic and enhanced DEV and PROD approaches.
About Client
Specializing in less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping, they offer cost-effective, efficient, and prompt transportation solutions across North America.
The Challenge
- The client faced significant challenges within their Development (DEV) process due to a high volume of incident test requests, including application modification, enhancement, bug fixes, and research, often requiring a rapid return by the development team. This influx of tasks spanned various departments, such as Linehaul, Finance, Pricing, SAP, and EDI.
- Several programs lacked documentation, and the operational landscape involved multiple interconnected systems within an ERP framework. This complexity demanded research and analysis before implementing new functionality to integrate and mitigate potential impacts on other networked systems.
- Coordinated and thorough testing was needed to ensure the applications within the DEV process functioned across various operating systems, browsers, and devices to support the integrity and functionality of the client’s systems.

...The Challenge
The client used an outdated version of .NET software on their local intra-network. They wanted to update their platform to a user-friendly, modernized web-based platform. However, with over 1,000 users, they were cautious about implementing drastic changes that could cause confusion.
Programmers.io circumvents a program’s limitations, allowing larger orders with up to 100 detail lines.
About Client
The Challenge
- The client’s automated tax report using third-party API-integrated software resulted in users frequently experiencing accidental order placements and billing discrepancies, particularly with larger orders.
- The third-party software could process only 50 item specifications for an order. This limited revision call capacity prevented efficient, error-free mass order processing.
- The system automatically paused larger orders when it detected an error in tax calculations. To proceed with the fulfillment of the order, the client manually intervened to resolve these issues.

The Challenge
The client faced a challenge with their payment processing system, where users needed to apply payments to returned checks. If a payment was recorded in error and had to be deleted, the check’s status should have reverted from “Paid in Full” to its previous status. This issue led to confusion and inaccurate financial reporting.

They required a solution that streamlined this process and ensured better control over their inventory management.

The Challenge
The client encountered significant challenges within their Development (DEV) process due to a high volume of incident test requests (application modification, enhancement, bug fixes, research, and sometimes production issues) that required rapid action taken by the development team (DEV).
- High volume of tasks: There was a high volume of development tasks across the departments (e.g., Linehaul, Rating and Billing, SAP). The high volume of tasks caused bottlenecks and slowed down processes in all the departments when they interacted.
- Research and analysis: No existing documentation was present for some programs. The operational landscape involved multiple systems interconnected through an ERP framework. This intricate framework introduced complexities, as changes or issues in one system could potentially impact others within the network. Therefore, research needed to be done for the implementation of new functionality.
- Production issues: Frequent production issues need to be addressed on time. The application’s demand for compatibility across various platforms introduced another layer of complexity. Ensuring the application functioned seamlessly across different operating systems, browsers, and devices required rigorous testing.

The Challenge
The client was struggling with several critical issues in their existing on-premises data management system, which was causing significant operational inefficiencies and financial strain:
The legacy on-premises DB2 system was becoming increasingly inefficient, leading to high maintenance costs and limiting the company’s ability to scale operations. These inefficiencies became more pronounced, threatening their ability to compete effectively in a dynamic market.
The existing system’s lack of scalability was a major bottleneck, preventing the client from handling the growing volume of data required to support their expanding network of over 600 independent stores.
The manual and outdated deployment processes resulted in frequent delays and inconsistencies. This lack of automation made it difficult for them to respond quickly to market demands, leading to missed opportunities and reduced operational efficiency.

Seamless COBOL to SQL Migration Improves Performance and Reduces Costs for ERP Client
About Client
With over three decades of experience, the client operates a network of large cash-and-carry warehouse stores, serving a wide range of customers in the food service industry.
The Challenge
- The client’s legacy Mainframe COBOL system was inefficient, with batch jobs taking over 30 minutes to complete. This delay caused bottlenecks in operations, hampering productivity and responsiveness to business needs.
- Maintaining the system was expensive due to high licensing fees for Mainframe servers. The lack of scalability further increased costs and limited the ability to handle growing workloads.
- Job failures were difficult to troubleshoot because of insufficient logging and tracking mechanisms. Restarting jobs required manual backup and restore steps, consuming excessive time and storage, and delaying high-priority tasks.
- Data stored in Mainframe files was inaccessible, making it challenging for teams to retrieve and analyze critical information needed for decision-making.
- As the client expanded operations, the outdated system struggled to scale, creating a pressing need for modernization to stay competitive in a fast-paced industry.

It was linked to the customer’s data residing on a mainframe computer. The application had to be released on time, and it was critically important that test coverage was known to eliminate defects in all stages of the end-to-end operation.
There were challenges during the initial period of the project. One involved understanding the complex functionalities of the integrated products in the suite. A second challenge was that 85% of the project was on a company mainframe and testing was done manually. Fast, comprehensive testing was imperative to meet their schedule and avoid surprise errors at the later delivery stages. This was especially true for the mainframe code interaction with the graphical user interface (GUI) application.

The Challenge
The client’s original website was built using JavaScript and operated through APIs for healthcare functions. They established an Automation Framework utilizing Cucumber, Selenium, and Java.
- The execution time for each test case was notably lengthy, taking several seconds in some instances. Moreover, the complete execution of the regression suite consumed about 1 to 2 hours.
- The Selenium framework’s capabilities were restricted, resulting in the inability to automate specific processes. One such instance was the challenge of automating the “User Authentication during new tab operations within the same session.”
Meeting the requirements posed a challenge due to several factors:
- Slowness Root Cause: We attribute the root cause of the slow test executions to the outdated version of Selenium. Furthermore, we identified code repetition within the automation scripts contributing to the sluggish performance. Additionally, the automation scripts had hardcoded timeouts due to the behavior of the client’s site, which further exacerbated the execution time even more.
- Desktop Automation Scenarios: Some of the scenarios that needed to be automated involved desktop automation actions that extended beyond the capabilities of Selenium alone. These actions required interactions with the desktop environment that Selenium couldn’t address adequately.
