The Challenge

The client carried large amounts of maritime data in the form of reports which were scattered across various local drives, SharePoints, and 3rd party services. They needed a way to centralize their mission-critical data in order to save time on this inefficient and error-prone process.

Data centered in these reports also needed to be analyzed manually by the customer facing team. This process was not only time-consuming but resulted in poor data visibility from a high-level view.

Additionally, the client aimed to establish a subscription-based service for the data contained in their reports. To achieve this, it was necessary to digitize both historical reports and those created going forward.

The Programmers.io team followed an Agile approach to deliver impactful results in 12 months.

Processed Unstructured Data

We used Azure Open AI to identify valid maritime reports from both PDF and Word document formats. We then employed Azure Functions and Logic Apps to process the unstructured data, using Python to implement PySpark as the API.

Data Engineering

Azure Data was used as our engineering solution to clean, transform and store data in delta tables by implementing medallion architecture using Azure Synapse Analytics and Azure Storage Accounts.

Enabled Data Reporting

Microsoft Power BI was utilized to present data at a reporting layer, enabling the customer team to analyze maritime cases based on the client’s available and processed data. For ease of data access, we applied multi-table data modelling.
