The Challenge

A premier provider of medical cost management services ran the vast majority of its business processes on an IBM i (AS/400) system, with core applications developed in-house over more than two decades.

The IT support staff, though experienced, was small—running a lean department meant that taking on projects beyond day-to-day operations was consistently a struggle.

Over time, the project pipeline grew beyond the capacity of the in-house team. Compounding the pressure, mandated time-sensitive legislative changes introduced a greater sense of urgency, leaving the IT team in a critical crunch.

It became clear that the organization needed an experienced external partner with a proven background in IBM i development, integration platform implementations, and a track record of successfully connecting IBM i environments to external applications.

 

Our Solution

IBM i and MuleSoft to work alongside the client's internal IT department. Rather than simply filling gaps, the team took ownership of the client's IBM i development backlog and led the full implementation of a MuleSoft Anypoint Platform-based integration layer—building a foundation designed not only to address immediate project priorities but to enable reusable, accelerated delivery for all future integration requirements.

Central to the solution was the deployment of infoConnect for MuleSoft—a purpose-built plugin that enables bi-directional, real-time connectivity between the IBM i and MuleSoft. This allowed the client's IBM i-resident data to flow seamlessly to external applications, partners, vendors, and customers without requiring changes to core IBM i code.
